One of the most frustrating things about driving is the bill that comes after you have to fill up. It is remarkable that despite the fact that we have made so many amazing technological advancements with our automobiles, and yet the standard cars we buy seem to be limited in how they can perform. Even though we are told that a particular vehicle can only have so many miles per gallon, or so much horsepower, the truth is we are not limited to just what manufacturers claim. First introduced to the industry towards the end of the 1970s, the tuning chip became increasingly popular during the 80s and 90s. Now technological advancements have given us the ability to use these chips to control the performance of our vehicles by adding them to the engine control unit (ECU). This will allow you to gain access to things like your Mustang’s fuel injection, spark timing, automatic transmission, electronic throttle, valve timing, ABS, electronic stability control, boost control, and you can even control your speed governor if you have one installed.

The benefits you can receive are not something that is arbitrary, and real results can be seen if used properly. There are some who claim that they have been able to increase their fuel efficiency by as much as 7 miles per gallon, and add 60 horsepower to the functionality of their engine. This is achieved by the Mustang performance chip doing things such as altering the ignition timing.

When doing something of this nature it is important to know that you will need to use a higher octane fuel when doing this in order to avoid pre-ignition detonation. When a manufacturer designs their vehicles they set a particular timing for it to run properly and when you change this without first compensating with the grade of fuel you can unfortunately have the opposite effect, reducing the performance of your Mustang.
