It’s quite usual to employ a string of undeserved superlatives when describing most products these days. However, from time-to-time, a product does come along actually deserving of such treatment, such as the brilliant Peugeot Horizon wheelchair accessible vehicle.
To call it almost perfect from a wheelchair user’s point of view is not an overstatement in any shape or form. It’s just simply the truth. But what else could be said, given the mobility car is probably the most popular wheelchair vehicle available via the Motability Scheme?
And no wonder when you look at the robust but striking outline. It looks the business, like a car that’s got somewhere to go, something to discover. Without a doubt, it’s certainly one of the most stylish MPVs around.
But if the exterior design is everything you’d expect in a modern vehicle, the interior begs you to sit in front of the wheel and simply drive away.
The Peugeot Horizon, based on Peugeot’s Partner Tepee, a car which has proved perfect for conversion into a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV), comes with a string of features making it an excellent choice for just about any wheelchair user.
Accessibility is key, as is flexibility, and the Horizon has both in abundance. Safety, too, is an extremely important consideration for the wheelchair user. No worries there then, with everything designed to the highest of specifications.
The lightweight ramp fitted to the back allows easy access and is shallow in gradient, neatly helped by the specially lowered floor of the vehicle. Perfect indeed. But that’s not all. The Horizon can also be fitted with an optional, remote controlled electric wheelchair winch for extra assistance, if required, at no extra cost.
Simply hook the front frame of the wheelchair up to the winch and the hand-held remote can be used to ease the disabled passenger into or out of the car. Once the wheelchair is safely inside, it can be quickly locked into position by means of four high quality wheelchair restraints positioned on the floor. A full lap and diagonal seatbelt is also available to provide added safety and security for the wheelchair user.
There are a couple of other features which make the ramp pretty unique. Firstly, it can be folded flat on the floor when the car is not required to transport the wheelchair user, thus increasing boot space dramatically. Secondly, the ramp also requires less space, compared to many others, making it ideal for tight parking spaces.
But when it comes to seating layout, the Peugeot Horizon excels. The standard configuration allows three seated passengers at the back. However, the rear seat comes with a 60:40 split. When the larger section is folded forwards out of the way, there’s room for a passenger at the back, along with the wheelchair user, and space enough to accommodate a scooter!
Owners can opt instead for a single seat fitted at the back, making more space for larger wheelchairs; or for two single seats, each either side of the wheelchair user; or for three single seats, with the middle seat having the option of folding forwards when the wheelchair user is not aboard.
